Have you ever found yourself in shock from a random company layoff?
Did you start your dream job only to find yourself ugly crying at home every night because of your awful, toxic boss or co-worker?
These instances are so real and can happen at anytime and you're not always prepared for them. It leaves you frightened and wondering how you will even afford your monthly rent next month. This is why you always need to be prepared!
You're constantly learning new skills whether you realize it or not. You may have taken up new tasks at work or trained a new employee and didn't realize this could add 5 new skills to your resume.
Skills are transferrable. Your desk job may have helped you with sales skills by answering the phone and explaining products to customers. I went from 10 years of sales into recruiting and absolutely killed it! Sales taught me how to communicate with people and overcome objections. I was able to explain the position details and basically sell people the jobs I was offering them.
You want to have customized resumes for different industries you are applying for. Recently, I got fired from my HR position (thank you baby Jesus because the HR director was toxic AF) and was able to transfer into a new position within a different department. Because of the tech skills I had working with different cell phone carriers, I was able to transfer those "tech" skills into designing fiber optics to the home. I didn't have a generic resume showcasing my skills. I only had a recruiting/HR resume from the last 7 years. If I was already prepared, the interview would have went way smoother.
Did you know that a lot of HR systems automatically reject resumes if they're not in the correct format to download in their system? You want a format that's basic and doesn't have a lot of different sections or it may be too complicated for the HR system to recognize it and you will automatically get rejected from the job you just applied for.
Moral of the story, keep your awesome new skills updated on your resume and have a few different resumes to be able to hand out if needed.
